The Mu Theta Alpha Honors Society (formerly The Discovering Math Club)
The Discovering Math Club, created in 2003, was, for two decades, one of the most successful and active student organizations at the Wolfson Campus. It offered students opportunities to explore mathematical topics beyond the regular curriculum and encouraged participation in statewide mathematics competitions.
In 2023, the organization evolved into the Mu Theta Alpha Honors Society, expanding its mission to promote excellence in mathematics, research, and academic leadership among students. The society continues the legacy of the Discovering Math Club through academic presentations, workshops, and participation in statewide and national math contests.
The Mu Theta Alpha Honors Society is currently one of the most dynamic groups at Miami Dade College, Wolfson Campus, under the guidance of:
- Professor William Neris (wneris@mdc.edu) — Main Advisor
- Professor Alvio Dominguez (adoming1@mdc.edu) — Complementary Advisor Professor
- Arturo Presa (apresa@mdc.edu) — Complementary Advisor
Any student interested in joining the society is encouraged to contact one of the advisors for more information
RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS
2024–2025 Florida Statewide Math Olympics
In the 2024–2025 academic year, the Wolfson Campus mathematics team, composed entirely of members of the Mu Theta Alpha Honors Society, achieved first place at the Florida Statewide Math Olympics, held on April 6, 2025, at Santa Fe College in Gainesville. The competition included topics such as trigonometry, precalculus, calculus I, and calculus II. Students were challenged to solve 10 problems in 10-minute intervals per question.
Along with the team’s first-place victory, two members—Gustavo Falcón and Elvis Cabrera—earned first and second place, respectively, in the individual component of the tournament. That portion required solving 40 problems in 90 minutes without a calculator, followed by 10 problems in 45 minutes with a calculator.
The winning team members were: Gustavo Falcón, Elvis Cabrera, Miguel de la O, and Marco Peña.

This outstanding performance continues a long-standing tradition of success that began with the Discovering Math Club and now continues with the Mu Theta Alpha Honors Society at the Wolfson Campus.
Over the years, Wolfson Campus math teams have consistently ranked among the top colleges in Florida in previous Math Olympics events, earning several team and individual awards. The Mu Theta Alpha Honors Society proudly builds on this legacy while inspiring new generations of students to achieve excellence in mathematics.
What Students are Saying….
“Math makes sense, you know? So, I appreciate it for that,” said Falcón, a 17-year-old student in the School for Advanced Studies at Wolfson Campus, who aspires to pursue a career in computer science.
“Being part of the Mu Theta Alpha Honors Society has allowed me to be surrounded by brilliant peers with extensive knowledge across many areas of mathematics. My fellow members are always eager to help explain concepts I may not fully understand and are a great resource whenever I have questions. It’s one thing to ask an online tutor for help, but it’s completely different to learn from another student who understands the day-to-day challenges of being in a math class. Simply being in an environment filled with people passionate about math has, by association, made me a stronger and more confident math student. I’m an international relations major on a pre-law track who just happens to be surprisingly decent at math — and through this club, I’ve developed a genuine appreciation for it. Math is part of everything we do, regardless of major or career path. Even if math isn’t your favorite subject or you’re not in a STEM field, joining Mu Theta Alpha is absolutely worth it. The support, connections, and personal growth you gain from being part of such a community make it an incredibly rewarding experience.” Isabella Baquerizo
