Assistance with Skills and Motivation

The Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program is a no-cost initiative targeting veterans that are seeking to engage in postsecondary education. Through the program, eligible veterans can obtain a basic skills assessment, preparation for standardized postsecondary tests, assistance with GI benefits and forms, and linkage to various support groups and services around the community. In addition, eligible veterans will receive academic tutoring, aid in course selection, information on federal student financial aid programs, a stipend and other additional services ranging from financial literacy to career-related and cultural enrichment activities.

Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is a federally funded program housed at Miami Dade College that assists veterans entering or reentering post-secondary education. Veterans have unique challenges transitioning from military service to post-secondary education. Let us help you become college ready by taking advantage of the many services we offer.

Veterans Upward Bound provides the following FREE services:

Success coaching:

Participants meet directly with student success coaches, who will provide monitoring, advising and case management specific to their educational needs.

Tutoring and instruction in online refresher courses, including:

  • Math through pre-calculus
  • Lab science
  • Foreign language
  • Composition
  • Literature
  • Preparation for the entrance exam

Assistance with:

  • GI benefits
  • Course selection
  • Applications for college admission
  • Application for federal financial aid
  • Linkage to agencies servicing veterans
  • A monthly stipend

Eligibility

  • Not yet completed or attained a degree
  • Must have more than 180 days of military service (or less if medically discharged); or
    • Are a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces called to active duty for a period of more than 30 days; or
    • Were a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States who served on active duty in support of a contingency on or after September 11, 2001.
  • Discharge must be other than dishonorable
  • DD 214 required

Additionally, participants must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Have academic need
  • Be a first generation college student (neither parent has earned a 4-year degree)
  • Be considered low income according to federal guidelines
